A $4000-a-night lodge on New Zealand's North Island has been named the world's best new luxury hotel.

Luxury Travel Intelligence picked Helena Bay Lodge, north of Auckland, ahead of hotels in the Caribbean, Italy, France and the USA.

'This is destined to become one of the world's best hotels, ' the publication said in its list of the world's best and worst new hotels for 2016.

Helena Bay Lodge, north of Auckland in New Zealand has topped a list of the world's best new luxury hotels

The unique $50 million property has just five suites, accommodating no more than ten guests

'This unique $50 million property has just five suites, accommodating no more than 10 guests.

'Every conceivable luxury is to hand. The architecture and decor is intentionally on the bland side, so as not to distract from the beautiful surrounding landscape.'

The lodge offer junior suites for $1, 750 per night for two guests, right up to villa suites for $3, 850 per night.

'All the Villa Suites have extensive balconies with views overlooking Helena Bay beach and beyond to the South Pacific Ocean, ' Helena Bay Lodge says on its website.

'Leica binoculars are provided for the opportunity to view bird life, visiting whales and dolphins, and vessels tracking across the bay out to sea.'

The luxury lodge was designed in a project headed by Auckland-based developer Chris Seel, who said he was pleased with the hotel's number one ranking.

'It's good for Helena Bay and good for New Zealand. It's an absolute honour to be included on the list and it means a great deal to us.'
